The Spanish Association of Aniridia has awarded the Best Research Poster award to a communication on Aniridia and Associated Disorders, authored by Dr. Pilar Casas, together with Prof. Jorge Alio and Ana Siverio, of Vissum Corporation. The awarded communication was entitled «Correlation between the degree of foveal hypoplasia and visual acuity in patients with congenital aniridia». This is a study of 12 patients suffering from this rare disease. Congenital aniridia is a complex disease that affects not only the iris but also the cornea, the natural lens, the iridocorneal angle, the retina and the optic nerve. The results of this research help increase awareness of this disease and provide information of great diagnostic and prognostic value for patients through a quick, noninvasive test, such as the OCT (optical coherence tomography).
This paper was presented at the 89 Congress of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology, held in 2013 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Dr. Casas is head of the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Glaucoma in Vissum Alicante.
