The III Seminar of Continuing Education in Ophthalmology “New Corneal Surgery Keratoplasty, Crosslinking and Techniques in Corneal Regeneration” took place on Saturday 28th November, at 10.30, at the Palacio de Congresos del Ilustre of the College of Physicians of Alicante.
Dr. Jorge Alio, professor and chairman of ophthalmology at the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche, presided the seminar, which brought together leading experts in glaucoma, ocular surface and new corneal surgery. Dr. Alió also gave a talk on “Ocular surface reconstructions in cases of ocular perforations with autologous fibrin membrane and PRP” (“Reconstrucciones de superficie ocular en casos de perforaciones oculares con fibrina autológa y PRP”).
The seminar featured such professionals as Dr. Alfredo Vega, who made a speech “Invasive corneal pharmacology: crosslinking U.V. collagen” (“Farmacología invasiva de la cornea: crosslinking U.V. de colágeno”), Dr. Jorge L. Alió del Barrio, from the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche, and Dr. Francisco Arnalich, from the University of Alcala de Henares, who is also a doctor at Ramon y Cajal Hospital in Madrid, made a presentation on posterior and anterior lamellar corneal surgery
Moreover, Dr. Arnalich gave two speeches: “Treatment of Urrets-Zavalia syndrome by double lamellar transplant” (“ Resolución de un síndrome de Urrets Zavalia con doble trasplante lamellar”) and “Large-diameter transplant for Acanthamoeba keratoscleritis treatment” (“Trasplante de amplio diámetro para resolución de queratoescleritis por acanthamoeba”). At the same time, Dr. Javier Clavel Laria, from the University General Hospital of Elche, was delivering a speech entitled “DMEK: technique, results and new challenges” (“DMEK: técnica, resultados y nuevos retos”).
This educational activity is part of the Continuous education program in ophthalmology led by Professor Jorge L. Alió. This program is supported by the Ministry of Health, the Carlos III Health Institute and the Cooperative Health Research Thematic Network on “Age-related Eye Disease, Visual Quality and Quality of Life”, sub-project “Visual Quality”; and another project of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, the Carlos III Health Institute, the Cooperative Health Research Thematic Network ´Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment of Prevalent, Degenerative and Chronic Eye Diseases´, sub-program ´Ocular Structures and Common Pathologies´.
The seminar was organized in collaboration with the College of Physicians of Alicante, Division of Ophthalmology, Department of Pathology and Surgery at the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche and Thea and Alcon Innovation laboratories.
